The Pantheon was built as a church between 1764 and 1790. Its enormous dome dominates Paris from the top of the hill Sainte-Geneviève on the left bank of the Seine.

During the French Revolution of 1789 and shortly after its construction, the Pantheon has become a memorial to celebrate the great men of the history of France. On the front you can read “the great men the grateful homeland”.
Some of these “great men” are Pierre and Marie Curie, the physicists who discovered the radioactivity, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Victor Hugo.
The last mortal remains to have been brought to the Pantheon was that of Alexandre Dumas.
